A light hearted look at what you could experience working in the industry

Wednesday 8 September 2010 - Safety is a big issue on the mine sites these days. There are lot of procedures and rules we get drummed into our heads everyday. Obviously there is a good reason behind it - no-one wants to get hit on the head or lose a finger because some knob wasn't doing their job properly. Thankfully though, these days issues like this are rare, and instead we generally get the more funny-stupid safety issues cropping up. Like the other day on a mining site up north, some knob managed to roll over their dump truck. Not sure if they were trying to pull a wheelie in the beast or what exactly, but it rolled over on the side. Now these trucks are the biggest mothers you'll see, so they would have had a helluva job trying to put the thing back up the right way again. I wouldn't have liked to see the panelbeating bill for that job!
Monday 6 September 2010 - I bunged my knee up pretty bad last night playing touch rugby that pretty much ended up a game of league, this big kiwi held my foot and went into a death roll and tore the cartilage, cheating buggers, just like their national team, ha-ha. Its all fun and games out here though theres an instant comraderie with fellow miners, sort of what you get with the army or a sports team. I've never met a miner I didn't like.
Saturday 4 September 2010 - I've been on a few training days lately, these are a piece of piss, there is no pass or fail, the only test in it is turning up on time and lasting out the day, plus getting 35 an hour to learn about cultural awareness isn't too bad. Theres a new batch of recruits starting this week, there is definitely no such thing as the typical miner any more, I've meet men of all ages, teens straight out of school, and even a nana who joined the mines to find adventure.
